In Class This Year...

During the year we made a few video games using a simple game engine, Game Maker, and a more complex one, Unity.

The Steps of Creating a Game

Brainstorming

A situation where a person, or a group of people, meet to generate new ideas and solutions around a specific domain of interest by removing inhibitions. People are able to think more freely and they suggest many spontaneous new ideas as possible. All the ideas are noted down and are not criticized and after brainstorming session the ideas are evaluated.

Developing the Game Ideas and Gameplay

Who are the characters?
What events do you want to happen?
What do you want the players to do?
When are the events happening?
Is your character in the future or the past?
Where does your game take place?
Why would customers purchase your game?

Sketching

A sketch is a rough drawing of an idea or model.
Sketches are done freehand and are not intended to be a finished work.
The purpose is to communicate your ideas to the team.
Sketches are looser, less refined forms of a drawing.

Creating a Storyboard

A storyboard is a series of connected pictures, with or without words, that tells the story or flow of events in a game or a video.
Graphic organizers to visualize media.
The storyboard’s purpose is to relay your ideas and plans to your colleagues.
Storyboards do not have to be linear, but could more resemble a flowchart where the arrows show all of the possibilities that a player could encounter.
This is the best way to share your vision with your team.

Creating a Game Design Document

A game design document (GDD) is a highly descriptive living design document of the design for a video game.
A GDD is created and edited by the development team and it is primarily used in the video game industry to organize efforts within a development team.
The document is created by the development team as result of collaboration between their designers, artists and programmers as a guiding vision which is used throughout the game development process.
When a game is commissioned by a game publisher to the development team, the document must be created by the development team and it is often attached to the agreement between publisher and developer.
A game design document may be made of text, images, diagrams, concept art, or any applicable media to better illustrate design decisions. Some design documents may include functional prototypes or a chosen game engine for some sections of the game.
Although considered a requirement by many companies, a GDD has no set industry standard form. For example, developers may choose to keep the document as a word processed document, or as an online collaboration tool.
The purpose of a game design document is to unambiguously describe the game's selling points, target audience, gameplay, art, level design, story, characters, user interface, assets, etc.

Releasing the Game

The final step of creating a game is testing it.
When the game is fully ready, it is released to the stores.
To let people know about our game, we advertise it.
